Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any major honors show nears, you'll find a demand for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
